The variegated mask is held up in a gesture which 
is read alternately as a frightened attempt to avert 
an attack and a sprout of letters that can at any 
time gather into words.
Thus, Bastrup points to the duality of the mask, to 
its ability to either strengthen or weaken us. 
In some situations, a mask will enable us to do 
things we otherwise would not dare to embark on, 
while in others it significantly limits our possibilities.
